This upcoming week is the last week that Tristin Lowe's Mocha Dick exhibit will be on display at the VMFA. The life size replica of the albino sperm whale that terrorized early 19th century whaling vessels near Mocha Island in the South Pacific is incredible. "This project was like the story of Moby-Dick - embarking on a journey, transfixed by the call of the sea," Lowe says. "It is not about Ahab's quest for revenge, and not even about the whale itself, but more about Ishmael's search for the unattainable."

Be The Match Registry

All of us here at Minimalist have been personally touched by the effects of cancer in its array of manifestations, so we take every opportunity we can to promote awareness and support in finding a cure. Very recently, Minimalist writer Emily Jones' little cousin Abby completed the year-long treatment phase for A.L.L. and moved into maintenance, which is about an 18 month process directed at preventing relapse. Should a relapse occur for her, she may possibly need a bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow transplants can often times come from immediate family members, such as parents or siblings, but sometimes they are not close enough matches. That is where you can help- become a donor.

The National Bone Marrow Donor Program is the world's leading matching organization of bone marrow donors to recipients in need. Since 1987, their Be The Match Registry has facilitated over 43,000 marrow transplants that have given leukemia, lymphoma, and sickle cell patients a greater survival rate as they fight the good fight. The registry has grown to more than 9 million potential donors who are willing to donate marrow to someone they do not yet know, which is downright awesome by our standards.

Throughout January 2012, the American Express Foundation has provided a grant that will pay for all costs associated with joining the Be The Match Registry for any volunteer who signs up. The Minimalist team would like to encourage all of our readers to take a moment to consider this opportunity, as your decision to join could quite literally save someone's life. Please read this before you make your commitment.

Minimalist writer Christie Thompson actually knows someone who's life was saved by the registry:

My good friend was diagnosed with Leukemia in the Spring of 2010 and after his first round of treatment and being told he was cancer free, had the incredibly devastating news of finding out only months later that his cancer had returned. At that point, there was no other option than to proceed with a Bone Marrow Transplant since his cells were unlikely to ever return back to normal after the cancer. He went through some of the hardest months of his life - physically and emotionally, to receive the transplant, which ultimately saved his life. An organization I was a part of in college was able to get over 50 students registered with Be The Match in his honor last Spring and now you have the chance as well.

Be The Match pays nearly $100 per individual registration, so this opportunity from the American Express Foundation is incredible and beyond necessary. The survey is short, as it takes no more than 15 minutes online, and they will mail the registration kit directly to your home. It's so simple! We encourage you to make the choice to potentially give someone a second chance at life. It would mean the world to us at Minimalist, not to mention those currently battling life threatening diseases. (On that note, Christie's friend is doing incredibly well and healing at an unbelievable rate! His new stem cells gave him that chance.)

If you decide that marrow donation is not for you, but you still wish to support the National Bone Marrow Donor Program, you may make a financial contribution through their website.

January's First Fridays Art Walk
Just because it's cold outside doesn't mean the art should be lonely. Put on your mittens and hats and enjoy a less crowded first First Fridays of 2012. And by cold, I meant practically balmy, temps will not even drop below 40 tonight.

Saturday:

Wilderness First Aid Certification Course
Course Title: Casual Hiker, Rural Living or Urban Disaster

This course will cover hands-on learn how to care for an injured / ill person during the critical minutes or hours before ambulance / hospital hand-off. It will be a blend of classroom instruction & hands-on rescue scenario practice and no prerequisites are necessary. The course counts as recertification for WFA, AWFA, WFR and wilderness part of W-EMT and is approved by the Boy Scouts of America and the American Camping Association.

The class is a little pricey ($175 for two days, 8:30 AM - 6 PM) but if you're an avid hiker, mountain biker or camper, this is an awesome resource to take advantage of! Check out WFA on Facebook here for more info and links to register.

Dance off your wilderness surviving skills at BEARD - A queer Dance Party at Balliceaux on Saturday night. Party starts at 10:30 PM and is free to 21+.

Sunday:

Check out the Elvis at 21 exhibit at the VMFA and celebrate Elvis' birthday on Sunday with Barbara Gray (the mystery woman in the photo above, revealed in 2011 by Vanity Fair). The celebration starts at 1 PM and lasts until 3 PM; free to all.

If you're lookin' to get hitched in 2012, you're in luck! The Richmond Bridal Showcase is in town this Sunday at the Greater Richmond Convention Center from 11am-5pm. The event provides brides-to-be an opportunity to preview services from local caterers, bands, and photographers as well as meet representatives from many central Virginia venues. You can purchase tickets in advance or at the door. Also, be sure to check out their blog for many resourceful and helpful tips as you plan your big day!

Reorganizing After the Holidays

The winter holidays have come and gone. If you're like most people, your home is feeling a bit disheveled. Decorations and lights still out, new gifts without a home. Sound familiar?

Worry not! I did a special segment on CBS 6's Virginia This Morning last Thursday offering tips for reorganizing after the holidays. Watch it here.

Seasonal storage containers at Target

In summary...

1. First, protect decorations from three things - critters, moisture and dust. For most items, a sealed plastic container in a garage or attic will work. Some items that are extra sensitive to heat and moisture (like candles and wrapping paper) should be stored in a temperature controlled environment such as a closet.

2. Use clear containers for easy identification of contents. Buy containers before the holidays to take advantage of seasonal colors. (It's a little late now, but a good tip for next year.)

3. Store your holiday cards and holiday music with decorations. You can also take pictures of how you decorated so you remember how you liked things for the next year.

4. It's worth the investment to buy specialty products to protect your memories. $10 on a container over the lifetime of the decoration really isn't expensive.

Additional tips not mentioned on CBS...

1. As you’re taking down the decorations, discard any items that are damaged beyond reasonable repair. Donate decorations you have not used in several years and don’t foresee using in the future.

2. Get all of your received holiday cards together, update your address book and then recycle. Only keep cards that have an especially meaningful message or sentimental value. I keep 5 to 10% of the cards I receive in an archival safe box.

3. Take a few extra minutes to clear out old items as you’re putting away the new gifts. For example, if you got a lot of new clothing, consign or donate things you haven’t worn in a year or so. Discard or donate any items that are replaced by new gifts, such as a new camera, or kids' toys.

A NYE inspired DIY Need Supply Hack

New Years Eve is the one time of year you can get away with sequins and glitter from head to toe and look perfectly dressed for the occasion. Needless to say, I love NYE. Recently, I also fell in love with a gorgeous pair of glitter slippers at Need Supply that are begging to be worn this weekend. Need's price tag forced me to leave the store empty handed but not without the determination to create my own pair.

Tacky Lights & Cool Nights

It's the last week before Christmas and that means it's the last few moments to soak up the magical holiday lights! Lucky for you, Richmond is the Capitol of Tacky Lights, (seriously, the mayor issued a proclamation just to solidify the title,) and there are plenty of ways to bring out the kid in all of us.

Richmond.com has issued their official Richmond Tacky Lights Tour map for 2011 which includes only the best of the best in holiday lighting. In order to make the list, each house must have at least 40,000 lights. Most folks just hop in their cars and take a self-guided tour of tackiness, but if you're feelin' extra fancy check out this list of limo services and bus tours that will cart you around in style while you ooh and ahh. Check out Richmond's tacky lights on national news on CBS Sunday Morning for a sneak peak of what's in store.

Rather walk around in this winter wonderland? Check out Lewis Ginter's Annual Gardenfest of Lights. With the exception of Christmas eve and Christmas day, the Gardenfest is open nightly from 5 - 10 PM until January 9th. Bring your mittens and hats as this tour is outdoors through the garden with nearly half a million bulbs. Admission is $11 for adults, $10 for seniors, $7 for children ages 3 – 12 and free for children under the age of 3.

Over the past year I've spent a lot of time documenting my work, my time and my experiences. School requires a certain amount of this as do job and residency applications. At first I took the practical approach by laying out my words and images in simple grids and when binding was necessary I used a plain metal coil. However, after a few compilations I became a little bored. I looked at the books and portfolios of artists and designers that seemed way more like play than work. As a result my books and portfolios have changed dramatically and I'm happy to say look way more like play than work too! I think the best parts are the sketches, watercolors, comments and quotes that show not just facts but humor and whimsy. Most of us aren't professional artists nor are we established writers but we have thoughts and talents and sharing those with friends and family can mean more than a fancy coffee table book or novel.

Steel Petal Press

One great tool is Lulu. Both a publisher and a book fabricator, it's a fantastic online services where you can use one of their many templates or go rogue and create your own. Cookbooks, novels, portfolios, photo books, wedding albums, calendars and e-books... you name it! I'm currently using their service to make a book which requires me to upload a pdf of my text and images (the website walks you through the simple, limited steps), select the cover and binding and voila, for approximately $25 I'll have my softcover 85 page book.

So, think of the words and images you've shared with friends and family... song lyrics, photos, concert ticket stubs, crazy nights out, family meals, the birth of your nephew, an epic road trip... and you've got a pretty amazing gift!

Bike Sharrows in the Fan!

If you've been traveling around the Fan lately, you've probably noticed the new bike sharrows painted on Meadow Street and Harrison Street. While I'm really excited to see the city moving forward with this project so quickly, I realized that a lot of folks aren't even sure what these symbols mean for bikers and motorists. I thought it might be helpful to give a little clarification for those of us that aren't familiar with this safety measure.

Bike sharrows are shared lane markings that are utilized to improve bicycling conditions on roads where designated bike lanes are either infeasible or inappropriate due to traffic conditions. The sharrows are meant to encourage cyclists to ride closer to the middle of the lane, steering clear of the "door zone" of parked cars. While it is the responsibility of the driver of a parked car to check their mirrors before opening doors, the sharrows help encourage a safer distance between the two to lessen potential accidents. The sharrows are also meant to remind motorists to expect cyclists on certain roadways. Lastly, the sharrows let motorists know that bicycles have an equal right to be in the driving lane, encouraging cars to pass cyclists at a safer distance.

I hope this might help clear up any confusion about the new safety measure and also encourage all of you to get out there on your bikes!

Shew, can't believe Thanksgiving is already over and December is right around the corner. You wouldn't know it from this brilliantly warm weather, but the holiday shopping season is upon us! I think we can all agree buying local, handmade goods is one of the best ways to find truly unique gifts while avoiding the "big box" mania.

Whether or not you are as excited as a Christmas elf or hibernating until the New Year, Richmond has got you covered for all your handmade gift needs. We've compiled a list of local craft shows and markets to get you through the season:

1. Bizarre Market Holiday
The annual Bizarre Market Holiday shop is open for business upstairs at Chop Suey Books in Carytown! This wonderfully cozy pop-up shop has everything from jewelry to laptop sleeves, screen prints, pottery, accessories, fuzzy friends, and much more (including Fibre Craft by yours truly!) - all handmade in Richmond! 2. Art Karma Auction + Party
On Thursday night from 7 to 10p, at Plant Zero Cafe in Manchester, Art 180 is hosting the Art Karma Auction + Party. This silent auction features local art, services, and dining deals. The party will also feature belly dancers, henna tattoos, exotic hors d'oeuvres, and more. Tickets are $16 beforehand and $20 the day of (kids are free). All of the proceeds go towards Art 180's after-school programs in self-expression for those living in challenging circumstances. Pick up some gifts and support an awesome cause, what more can you ask for?

3. The Bizarre Bazaar
The annual Christmas Bizarre Bazaar will take place this Thursday through Sunday, from 10a to 7p, at the Richmond Raceway Complex. This market will feature multiple handmade vendors, but it might not save you from much mania. The Bizarre Bazaar features hundreds of vendors, so you are bound to find the right gift if you dare to brave the crowds! Tickets are $7 for adults and $1.50 for kids. 4. aRtVA's Independent Art & Craft Show
This Sunday from noon to 5p, aRtVA will be hosting the inaugural Independent Art & Craft Show at the Bankuet Place in Manchester. (Side note: the Bankuet place is a former bank turned event space!) This show will feature 16 hand-picked local craft and art vendors, as well as good eats and drinks from Pizza Tonight, Atomic Bakery, and Grayhaven Winery. If all of that wasn't enough, WRIR's Michael Miracle and DJ Mikemetic will be DJing the event as well. Stop by my booth, Fibre Craft, and mention this list for 10% off any purchase!

5. Handmade Holiday
On the following Sunday, December 11, the Richmond Craft Mafia will be hosting more of Richmond's makers at the Handmade Holiday show at Plant Zero Cafe. From 11a to 5p there will be 65 handmade vendors set up and ready to provide you with your every holiday need. RSVP on Facebook here.

5. RVA on Etsy
Lastly, if you just can't bring yourself to shop in the presence of others, you can still shop local handmade by searching Richmond, Virginia from Etsy's homepage. There is a link towards the bottom on the left where you can "Buy Local" - type in your zip code, or Richmond and find over 20,000 items from local Richmond makers. You can also check out the Richmond Street Team on Etsy for another listing of local makers. I have a feeling you may be able to talk some sellers into free shipping by picking your item up! Etsy just created a mobile app as well, so you can shop local, handmade, and on the go! It's so easy!

The Listening Room 2nd Anniversary!

If you haven't made it to one of Richmond's renowned The Listening Room series, tomorrow night is your chance! It's the two year anniversary of the series and my good friend Nelly Kate will be playing. Check out (and help fund!) the hand crafted video she made for her Kickstarter project to support her new album, Ish Ish.

Richmond musicians Bonnie Staley of The Girtles (all female Beatles cover band), Cliff Boyd of Sportsbar, and James Wallace will also be gracing the stage at the Firehouse Theatre Project on 1609 W Broad Street. Secret tip - you are allowed to park at the Lowes across the street. Now you have no excuse not to come!

The show is free but donations are always encouraged to help support the series. It's one of my favorite Richmond music scene experiences. Hope to see you there!

The Moveable Type Truck in RVA!

This Thursday, the Visual Arts Center and Studio Two Three will be hosting the Moveable Type Truck as it passes through Richmond for a free open studio event! What is the Moveable Type Truck you may ask? It's the incredibly awesome 1982 Chevrolet step van that has been converted into a fully functional and mobile letterpress print shop by Kyle Durrie.

The Moveable Type Truck has been on tour around the country since June and will be parking at the Visual Arts Center this Thursday from 4 pm to 7 pm. Stop by to create a 3-color "free range creativity" poster. You can pull one color at each location: the truck, the VAC's letterpress studio, and Studio Two Three.

Kyle launched her fundraising campaign in November of 2010 with the help of Kickstarter. She was able to raise enough to fully convert the back of the 1982 Chevy with cabinets, workspace, a sign press from the mid-20th century, and an 1873 Golding Official No. 3 tabletop platen press. Her goal is to travel the country teaching and spreading the word about the awesomeness of printing the old fashioned way.

This is honestly one of the coolest things I've ever seen. Kudos to you Kyle for making this happen. Send us pictures of your prints to post if you make it out to this event!

A Plan for Shockoe Bottom: Get Involved

i.e.* is a collaborative community initiative to discover, support and accelerate Richmond's cross-industry creativity & innovation.

The city of Richmond has reached out to i.e.* to help facilitate a creative brainstorming session focused on making the economic development plan for Shockoe Bottom authentic, viable, and relevant to the community. The event will take place today at 4:30 pm! Head over to the Virginia Holocaust Museum at 2000 E Cary Street for the conversation and break-out sessions, followed by drinks and snacks at 6 pm provided by The Old City Bar.

The Weekend {list}

This weekend, Richmond will be full of runners, walkers, joggers, and exercisers galore. The bad part, traffic and parking will be jammed up all day Saturday; the good part, there will be an excess of seriously toned legs in the city. Whether you're into that runner's high or not, there is plenty going on to help you savor the weekend.

On Friday, the James River Film Society will be hosting a juried competition of short films (30 minutes or less) at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The James River Shorts competition will bring the best in short films from all over the globe, competing to win $2,000 in prizes. Noted filmmaker Roger Warren Beebe will be judging the competition. The films begin screening at 6:30 pm and the event will run you $8 for admission.

Saturday morning bright and early, the Richmond Marathon will be taking over the city... we're not kidding! Runners from 48 states and 15 countries (including our very own Emily Jones) will be racing down Broad Street, through the Museum District, down Riverside Drive, across the Belvidere Bridge, up towards Bryan Park... pretty much all over the place. Emily, my legs hurt just thinking about this. For all of you that are running, good luck! For the rest of you lazy types (myself included), camp out with your booze and radios and cheer on these brave souls - they will definitely need it. You can also visit the designated "party zones" for official race spectating. If you're planning on being out along the race course, leave your location in the comments - Emily sure will appreciate the extra support and fans! And if you really must know how that special runner in your life is progressing as the marathon unfolds, the event is offering free runner tracking through RaceIt.

Look for Emily as she sets out to complete her first ever marathon! P.S. - How awesome is that bib number? 2621... 26.2 with an extra 1/100th of a mile!

If you aim to completely avoid all marathon-related activities on Saturday, there is a comprehensive list of all road closures provided by the event coordinators; if you're more of the visual type, see the chart below, courtesy of RVANews.

After you buy your exhausted, noodle-legged amigos a round for finishing the marathon, head over to the Empire Theatre to see Richmond's own Jennifer Lemons, also known as The Checkout Girl, premiering her solo show, Loosely Based on a Real Girl. Her show tells the story of her backwards journey into a world where women in telephone headsets pretend to be anything you want them to be, for only $4.99 per minute. Jennifer Lemons currently writes the weekly column Off the Clock for RVAnews.com and is one of the best tweeter's of all time (seriously, she was voted the best by Style Weekly and Richmond Magazine). The doors and bar open at 8 pm and the show starts at 9. Tickets are $10 in advance, and $15 at the door.

Later on Saturday night, hit up Balliceaux to dance off the extra calories from your day drinking. Starting at 10:30 pm, DJs Mike Albrecht and Alan Smith will be hosting BEARD, a new alternative queer dance party. Beats will include indie, new wave, dance, electro, punk, riot-grrl, and everything inbetween. Show is free for 21 and up.

Pimento Cheese, Please!

Current Richmond resident, Nicole Lang, has combined two of my most favorite things in the entire world - pimento cheese and documentaries - to create one of the first ever movies to document the history and culture surrounding this Southern food tradition.

Pimento Cheese, Please! was born after Nicole discovered pimento cheese for the first time, about four years ago. Already having a fascination with the South (being born and raised in the North), she set out to uncover the mysteries, origins, and traditions surrounding this cheesy goodness. She funded her movie by receiving a grant and raising over $2,500 through Kickstarter.

Nicole finished the film in August and it was premiered in Oxford, Mississippi this past October. Richmond's first screening will be tomorrow night at the recently restored, historic Hippodrome Theatre. The movie will begin at 7:30 pm and is only $8 for a ticket. This weekend marks the beginning of the holiday season and there are plenty of ways to start celebrating.

Today kicks off the first day of Richmond Beer Week! There are literally dozens of beer specials, tasting, and events to get your fill of this fine fermented craft. Check out the Beer Week event page for a complete list of events around town that will be happening all the way through next weekend!

Once you get your beer tasting schedule in order, head over to Broad Street for November's First Fridays. This will probably be one of the last First Fridays events that doesn't require 12 jackets, 4 scarves and 3 pairs of mittens to stay warm, so enjoy it!

After the Art Walk, The Camel will be hosting some indie pop goodness to help you dance the warmth back in. Black Girls will be playing along with Winston Cup 1981 (Charlottesville) and Tiny Victories (NYC) starting at 9 pm. $5 to get in the door.

On Saturday, Gallery5 will be hosting the Richmond Burlesque Revue featuring local favorites and some rising stars of the burlesque scene. This show will be a sampling of the best talent in town from classic to nouveau acts. Doors open at 8 pm and the show starts at 9 pm, $10 to get in the door.

Later, get your groove on at Balliceaux with DJ Mixie and Sister Goldenhaze. There will be vinyl spinnin' featuring soul, funk, reggae, psychedelic rock and 80s dance jams. Dancin' times are free and start at 10:30 pm.

On Sunday, make your way to Oregon Hill for the first of many local markets this holiday season. The Fancy Flea Market will be held at the Fine Food Market every Sunday from 10 am to 3 pm, starting this weekend. Start your holiday shopping off right by buying local and handmade! The market will feature oddities, collectibles, crafts, vintage, clothing, antiques, furniture and more. They are also looking to add more vendors if you have something interesting to sell!

Stick Stack Show at the VAC

Starting on Friday, the True F. Luck Gallery at the Visual Arts Center will be hosting artist Johnathan Brilliant and his incredible sculpture exhibit called the Stick Stack Show. Johnathan Brilliant uses materials from the coffee shop, which he considers to be "his natural environment". He uses everything from stir sticks to sugar packets to build the site-responsive installations. The exhibit is meant to address "the upsurge of our contemporary caffeine culture and the development of the coffee shop as a popular 21st century social habitat." The exhibit will feature anywhere from 30,000 to 60,000 coffee stir sticks woven in place using only tension and compression.

The Stick Stack Show exhibition will be on display from November 4 through December 21 at the Visual Arts Center. The gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 am to 9 pm, Saturday 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunday 1 pm to 4 pm. The VAC will also feature a talk with the artist this Friday, November 4, from 5:30 to 6:00 pm.

So we are nearly half way into it - but I wanted to remind everyone about Halloweek RVA! Taste the Local and RVA Magazine present this 10 day long event to celebrate the creative, the gory, and the silly. Can't decide on just one costume? You're in luck because there are plenty of days to get your party on Halloween-style.

Tonight from 7 pm to 10 pm, check out Hallobeer at Mekong for some live tunes and a special beer line up (including RVA's newest brewery Hardywood Park). Thursday night you can catch the Zombie Prom at Empire starting at 10 pm or get down with the Weird Villains Dance Party at Bellytimber! On Friday night, check out WRIR's Monster Mashquerade at The Camel featuring mask and costume contests with music from DJ Pari, Jesse Split & Joanna O, The 27 Club, Canary Oh Canary and DJ Glycenide.

On Saturday, head to Carytown for the annual Richmond Zombie Walk at 1 pm. Once you get your fill of brains, Strange Matter will be hosting the Return of the Living Dead Bands at 10 pm. On Sunday night, Balliceaux will be hosting a double event starting with Seceretly Y'all presenting Richmond Macabre Masquerade followed by PLF's Speakeasy: All Hallow's Eve edition. (I have a few friends who attended the last PLF's Speakeasy and raved about it's awesomeness).

And lastly, on the official Halloween evening, get your dancin' shoes over to The Camel for The Big Payback's Halloween Special. The Big Payback is described as, "a 10 piece musical powerhouse dedicated to recreating the music of James Brown as accurately and as passionately as possible." I am beyond excited about this event.

Thoughts of a Long Distance Runner: The 20 Miler

This morning, at around mile eight, we hit the Nickel Bridge. It was still early, about 8:45, and the sun had not yet burned off the dense, blizzard-like, white-out fog that was hanging above the James. My friend Liz and I descended the quarter mile or so to the base of the bridge, and the fog enveloped us. We could see no more than 10 feet in any direction yet we could hear the river slapping the rocks some 100 feet below. The air was cool, crisp, very much the type of fall morning that defines what a “fall morning” is as long as you live. To our left, the east, was the rising sun, by my guess about four fingers above the horizon. I say “guess” because there was no outline of the sun, just the suggestion of one, and it’s bright, radiating aura illuminating the mist.

I've experienced this mystical feeling fog once before in my life - it was at Mario Botta’s Angeli Chapel at the top of Monte Tamaro in Switzerland. That day, I was accompanied by my camera, so I have photographic assistance in recalling the details of that day - the spacial relationships your mind tends to forget as the memory slips farther into your past. But what I've found is that, looking at these photographs now almost five years later, they will never recreate that feeling. In fact, they almost take away from it; flattening the exhilaration I had standing there in the mist, cantilevered out over the edge of the chapel.

I thought of those photos as I ran deeper into the fog this morning, and for the first time in my life I was thankful I was camera-less. I was free of feeling I had to encapsulate the entirety of that experience in a photograph.

. . . . . .

And there we were, floating through the clouds, literally gliding across the bridge on our runner’s highs.

Liz turned to me and said, nearly breathless, “This is our church. This is why we run.”

She was right. That was the type of run that stays with you forever, the kind that reminds you of the blood pumping through your veins; the type of run that makes you feel alive.

As we reached the end of the bridge I could start to see the outline of the rocks, the trees, the shoreline start to appear - our time in this fleeting moment was drawing to a close. I used every ounce of my memory to try and etch that experience in my head; I threw my hands in the air, took a deep, deep breath, and picked up the pace. 8 down, 12 to go.

On Wednesday, November 16, queen of design blogging and all things DIY, Grace Bonney, will be in Richmond's very own Manchester at the Plant Zero Cafe. Founder of the amazing Design*Sponge blog, Grace will be hosting a morning of DIY and home design know-how with other local Richmond designers.

There will be a choice of four seminars {Design Process, DIY Redos, Working with Color, & Holiday Floral Design} and then Grace will give a talk over lunch and a book signing! DIY Vol. II - Three Projects for Under $25

As the air gets cooler, there's nothing I crave more than to snuggle up in my apartment with a good beer and make stuff. This week I am going to show you three super simple and super cheap DIY projects that you could finish in less than a weekend.

1. Chalkboard Magnet for the Fridge
I know there's an app somewhere for writing the grocery list but I'd prefer to play with chalk while being productive. There is just something so nostalgic about writing on a chalkboard. To make your very own chalkboard magnet you will need a small piece of wood (or plastic), some chalkboard paint, magnet strips, and gorilla glue. I used one of the left over wood tops from my wine crate boxes for the chalkboard base. Make sure to sand the wood if you use an unfinished piece of wood so the chalk will erase more easily. Simply sand the wood (if necessary), paint with your chalkboard paint, and then glue the magnetic strips to the back of the board when the paint has dried. I tied a small string to a piece chalk and stapled that to the back of my board to keep the chalk handy. Stick to the fridge and start chalkin' it up! Total project cost: around $20 [Gorilla Glue - $5, chalkboard paint - $15, scrap piece of wood - free!].

The Richmond Folk Festival is here! This annual, free festival takes place on Brown's Island and brings dozens of musicians to perform at the outdoor venue's stages. This weekend couldn't be more perfect for an outdoor music festival!

On Tuesday, October 18, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery open their doors to the public between 4 and 7 pm for beer tastings and tours. Samples, as well as bottles and growlers, will be available. Located at 2408 Ownby Lane, between the Diamond and the Science Museum of Virginia, Hardywood will officially open their doors on October 22 at their launch party. Get a taste of Richmond's newest addition to our small but thriving brewery community!

Ghostprint Gallery's current show is by painter Jeffrey Vincent from Buffalo, NY. Showing through October 29, Vincent's show combines a range of literal and figurative work in acrylic and collage. Ghostprint Gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday from 1 to 7 pm.

I could spend hours perusing the discount fabrics at U-Fab on Robinson...

One of the best kept secrets in Richmond is the fabric and upholstery store U-Fab on Robinson Street, in the Fan. This amazing little oasis of designer fabrics is not only incredibly convenient to the city dweller, but also seriously affordable. Being someone who can't stop sewing, I quickly learned that fabric is always your biggest investment during a project. U-Fab carries some of the best and most recent designs at discounted prices (as low as $10/yard). Their stock consists entirely of upholstery weight fabrics, but you can often use upholstery for more than just re-doing a chair or couch. I've created bags and other accessories using the heavy-weight grade fabric that U-Fab offers.

Their store is usually only open until 6 pm on weekdays, but they have decided to keep the shop open late on Thursdays to accommodate your needs this holiday season. To celebrate their decision, they are hosting a party tonight with drinks, light food, and chances to win U-Fab gift cards! Virginia Commonwealth University is currently updating it's Master Site Plan, "VCU 2020," with help from local architecture firm, BCWH, along with Ayers Saint Gross of Baltimore. The plan is formulated to help the University grow strategically and thoughtfully throughout Richmond and the broader community. You have a unique opportunity to give them your feedback on what you think is positive and negative about the current campus and what you would like to see in the future. Even if you are not a student, we all basically live in VCU's backyard and are impacted by the plans and decisions made by the University. Richmond 2015: Cycling Championship!

Whether you're a cyclist in this city or not, this is some HUGE news for everyone! Richmond has been selected to host the World Road Cycling Championship, an event that is televised worldwide and at the caliber of the Tour de France! The nine day event will take place in September 2015 and is expected to draw thousands of international spectators, create over $130 million in revenue, and be viewed by 450 million people across the world - that's some serious publicity for the River City!

So if you can just hang tight for another four years, this event is sure to knock your socks off!

Weekend Events!

First Fridays returns tonight, following a two month hiatus. Expect some fairly drastic program changes (i.e. no street music or vendors) and additional security along Broad Street this evening, as the city intends to keep incidents at bay and avoid a repeat of the August event. Curated Culture director Christina Newton explained the event changes by saying:

"First Fridays is about making arts and culture accessible and inviting, but it’s also about encouraging sales and donations in order to keep business alive in Downtown. The activities that have occurred along Broad Street are inviting and fun, but have moved the program away from its mission and have unfortunately impacted public safety."

As usual, the walk starts at 5 pm and continues on til around 9 pm. Be sure to check out the hyper-collaborative Pin Pals exhibit which opens tonight at Gallery5 as part of the event.

If you're feeling like gettin' down, head on over to The Camel for the pop-rock tunes of Black Girls! Tonight they're joined by The Trillions and Jenny Besetz, and the show starts at 9 pm.

Ok, so pop-rock ain't your thing? Then you're in luck! The Byrd Theatre is hosting Grammy-nominated organist Cameron Carpenter tonight at 8 pm for A night with the Mighty Wurlitzer. General Admission tickets are $35 in advance (or $45 at the door) and they can be bought here or at Plan 9 in Carytown. The price may seem a bit high, but it's not without good cause - all of the event proceeds will go directly to the Byrd Theatre Foundation as it continues to restore and preserve Richmond's beloved theatre.

This weekend you can catch the Draw Your Own Manchester Kiosk at various locations. The kiosk is designed to fit within a standard parking space and allows Richmonders to draw their ideas for an improved and brighter Manchester district. You can catch the kiosk on Saturday at 201 Hull Street (just south of the Mayo Bridge) from 10 am to 4 pm, and then on Sunday it will move to Tricycle Gardens at Bainbridge and West Ninth Streets. The kiosk is the brainchild of VSAIA's Emerging Leaders in Architecture group, which you can read more about here.

Pink Ink Fundraiser + Farewell Steve Jobs

Emily's post yesterday seems to have been perfectly timed. It has got me thinking about giving and the daily impact we have on one another's lives. I had just come across RVA Magazine's article on Amy Black, owner of Trademark Tattoo in Carytown, and the amazing things she is doing to use her tattooing talents to help women who have survived breast cancer, and realized it was the perfect follow-up post to Emily's ideas on RADness.

In June 2011, Amy Black set out to help those in need through her talents in tattooing. She founded the Pink Ink Fund to help provide financial assistance to breast cancer survivors hoping to restore self-esteem by having reconstructive tattooed nipple re-pigmentation. The Pink Ink Fund is teaming up with Lamb of God and Mekong restaurant for an inaugural fundraising event featuring the DJ Williams Projekt that is happening tonight! The event will start at 7 PM and is free (minus your donations). RSVP on facebook here. Amy Black not only uses her talents for breast cancer survivors, but was also voted the Best Tattoo Artist in Richmond for 2011! In the giving mood yet? I sure hope so, because The Amazing Raise ends today at 6 PM. From their website, "During this 36-hour online giving event, the more unique donors who give a gift of $50 or more to their favorite nonprofits, the greater the chance of those organizations winning bonus grants of up to $10,000. While musing on giving to others, it's impossible not to mention the loss of Steve Jobs today. Steve Jobs was not only one of the most incredibly talented, innovative, and genius minds of our generation - he had a true passion for stimulating change that he hoped would benefit the entire world. In his speech to the 2005 graduating class of Stanford, he said, " [Y]ou can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life." I have to say that quote really resonates with me. All three of the Minimalist writers have been very personally affected by cancer and when things are hard (and sometimes unimaginably hard), it's always helped me to focus on trusting life will fall into place. Steve Jobs ends his speech with the call to "stay hungry and stay foolish." I think that quote sums up Richmond quite well. I'm incredibly happy to be in a place that fosters this type of culture. Whiling remembering Steve Jobs today, be sure to check out this incredible list of Apple's technical drawings for nearly all of their patents.

So, here's to you Amy Black and Steve Jobs. The world would be a different place without your impact.

Random Awesome Deeds {RADness}

The idea for this post -Random Awesome Deeds- requires a little of a back story, so hold tight while I explain...

My sweet little cousin, Abby, was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia) in March of this year, and needless to say it hasn't been a walk in the park for her, or my family, as she's gone through the ups and downs associated with the necessary treatments. What has really amazed me, apart from her resilience and determination, is how the community has really gathered around her and her family to support them during the most stressful and scary weeks. At least once a week, my aunt shares stories with us of an incredible and selfess act of kindness by a friend, the community, and even sometimes a total stranger, and it humbles me more and more each time.

For instance, at least two to three times a week, friends and neighbors will drop off groceries and already prepared meals, so my Aunt and Uncle can focus on Abby's medications, treatments, and health instead of wrestling with what to make for dinner. Numerous local businesses have held fundraising events where they donate an amount of their day's proceeds to CURE in honor of Abby. A couple of months ago, during a particularly rough patch, my aunt and uncle managed to take the kids out to dinner for a special night, where they could sit, relax, and have fun like "old times"; when the time came to pay the bill, the waitress informed them that a total stranger had already picked up the tab, and left them their best wishes. More recently, Abby was given the opportunity to have a little shopping spree at some stores in a local mall - an act also set in motion by a total stranger.

These are just a few examples of the amazing things people have done in the spirit of goodwill and kindness, and as I was driving home from my latest trip to visit Abby, was feeling particularly moved and inspired by these stories. I was conjuring up all kinds of ways someone could spontaneously change a stranger's day for the better by one simple act, when I arrived at a toll booth. I'm old fashioned and I don't have an EZ Pass, so I moved over to the full service lane and reached for my wallet. I found a couple extra dollars inside so, feeling inspired, I rolled down my window, handed the attendant a couple extra bucks, and asked them to pay for the next person to roll up behind me. She looked at me bewildered, asking, "Why do you want to pay for the person behind you if you don't even know who it is? People only do this if its their husband, or kid, or friend behind them!" I simply said I just wanted to help the next driver out, and she smiled.

I won't ever know who that person was, what their story is, or if it mattered to them that their toll that day was covered- but I have some hope that it might have inspired them to do something randomly awesome for another stranger.

So that finally brings this story full circle: I want to challenge all of our readers to dream up your own Random Awesome Deed and put it into action - and then share your idea and story with us! The first person to tell minimalist about their RADness experience in the comments section will receive an extra special something!

The Wine Crate: One Box, So Many Ways...

This DIY project is one that I’ve wanted to write about for quite some time now. I was first introduced the fantastic object that is the wine crate box a few years ago from my friend Megan, who was working for a wine distributor. Wine bottles travel from vineyard to distributor to local store in gorgeous wood boxes and that are more than often tossed into the trash after they’ve reached their final destination. But, wine and beer shops like Total Wine sell them for the awesomely cheap price of only $5 per box. These nifty little pieces of wine country have endless amounts of value to even the most minimally skilled DIY’er. Here are a few uses I have found for them:

Wine crates make excellent planter boxes. Living on a second floor apartment, I don’t have much dirt to play around in and had been looking for a simple way to add more greenery to my balcony. I grabbed about 4 or 5 boxes from Total Wine and brought them home – along with some potting soil and a few seedlings. I simply drilled holes in the bottom of the boxes (to allow for water drainage) and then planted my seedlings. I wanted to sit the boxes on the railing of the balcony so I drilled two screws into each side of each box and ran some wire from one screw to the other, going under the railing edge. The wire and screw technique ended up adding a great aesthetic detail as well as keeping the boxes firmly in place! Total cost was around $60, including the plants, soil, wire and boxes. Not too bad for your very own balcony garden! Not to worry about the changing seasons either – there are tons of fall weather plants that can survive the chilly nights!

It's officially Friday people - time to put your booze pants on and get ready for some fun. The weather will be chilly, but at least there will be sun! This weekend, Richmond is full of dance parties, festivals, and beer celebrations to help you remember why you love Fall so much.

No BS! Brass Band is takin' you straight to funky town - no BS included...

Start out this weekend right with a triple dose of dance party. Dance your way on over to The Camel for No BS! Brass Band with The Brand New Life starting at 9 pm. When you get your fill of brass funk (if that's even possible), dance your way back towards Carytown. RVA Magazine will be hosting Long Jawns at NY Deli starting at 10 pm. Long Jawns' beats are sure to keep you groovin' well into the night. And if those dance parties aren't enough to rock your socks off, head over to Balliceaux for the Italia Mondo Dance Party. The Minimalist ladies like to dance - can you tell?

After your hangover wears off, you've got festivals galore to bring you back to life. First off, there's the Hogtober BBQ Festival in Church Hill from noon to 7 pm. The tradition brings together "good neighbors and good cheer" - not to mention loads of BBQ and local music. The festival starts at 12 pm on Saturday and is open until 7 pm. Thirsty from all that BBQ? Well head downtown to Capital Ale House for their annual Oktoberfest celebration. The party will happen in the street and the Music Hall from noon until 10 pm. There will be German dancers, German music, and beers galore.

On both Saturday and Sunday, you can get your fill of history, culture, music and food at the annual 2nd Street Festival in Jackson Ward and the Italian Street Festival held at the Horticulture Garden at the Richmond Raceway Complex. The 2nd Street festival is a celebration of the Historic African-American neighborhood of Jackson Ward with street vendors and four stages full of live music. The festival is free and will be open Saturday, noon to 7 pm and Sunday, noon to 6 pm. Richmond's Italian Street Festival will host vendors of all kinds including Italian beers and wines, Italian foods, and cultural activities - not to mention more live music! This festival is free with a suggested $5 donation, open Saturday 11 am to 8 pm and Sunday 11 am to 6 pm.

Ah, I love October. A cold brew, a chilly breeze, and such amazing community. What more could you ask for?!

Local musicians Jonathan Vassar & The Speckled Bird collaborated with former RVA resident and filmmaker Kevin Gallagher to create a video for their song "Turn to Face the Wind" from their debut full length record "Signs & Wonders". Shot on Super 8 at Jonathan and Antonia's cabin home in Richmond, the film captures the essence of their community and lives together.

A little over a year ago, Frank Bucalo started Quickness RVA to give great restaurants great delivery options. The Quickness team hand-picks the restaurants they deliver for based on quality of food and local ownership. They promise quick delivery with as little carbon footprint as possible - delivering your meal on their bicycles. In addition to providing those around town with fast, affordable delivery, the Quickness group hopes to promote cycling as a viable transportation option and bring Richmond closer to a bicycle-oriented city.

Currently, Quickness RVA delivers for Strange Matter, Fresca, Lamplighter, Str8 out of Philly, Alamo BBQ, Buff's Corner, Nate's Taco Truck, Thai Corner and Bellytimber Tavern. It's Friday folks - grab your galoshes and get ready for an epic weekend. From shows, to festivals, to dance parties - we've got you covered with the {list} below. (We know we're a tad late but c'mon, did you really think we'd leave you hanging without your official weekend guide?)

Cults know how to get down.

FRIDAY

1. This weekend kicks off with the Cults / Foster the People show at The National tonight at 9 pm. Cults first self-titled album has been on repeat in my iTunes pretty much since it hit NPR's First Listen back in May. I saw them play at the Rock & Roll Hotel up in DC early in the summer and it was fantastic. This Manhattan born band is sure to get you in dancin' mood. Foster the People's Pumped Up Kicks has been the anthem of Summer 2011 and I can't imagine it will disappoint. Tickets are $20 at the door. Hope to see you there!

2. Also happening tonight is the wildly intriguing Faberge Burlesque show at the VMFA. This event is from 7 pm to 8 pm and is actually already sold out, but if anyone attends we'd love to know what it was like - leave your burlesque reflections in the comments!

3. Already well underway is Poe's Haunted Homecoming Tour series. How completely fitting is this dreary weather for a dramatic tour lead by Edgar Allen Poe?! The infamous Richmond poet will be played by Mr. Chris Patrick, and the tour will take place in Shockoe Hill Cemetery, as he leads participants through his "old haunting grounds". Tickets are still available for tonight and tomorrow night, so don't miss out on this unique event!

4. Round out your Friday evening with some late night dancing in costume at Balliceaux's PLF Speak Easy dance party. Come in your best fancy dresses, fedoras, and suits to get down with Sir Reinhold & Mr. Jennings. They will be providing you with swingin' mashup electro and crunk music! This party will also have a photo booth by Ian Graham, special drinks, dance contests and costume contests! RSVP on Facebook here for this free show.

SATURDAY

5. Want to watch some runners slip and slide outside as they scramble to cinch first place? The Maymont X-Country Festival kicks off early tomorrow AM with their annual 8K trail run at 7 am. Throughout the day various other competitive races will be taking place, click here for a comprehensive schedule. Visit the official Facebook page for more information!

6. VA PrideFest is here yet again and will be returning to Kanawha Plaza, located at 8th & Cary downtown. Come out (zing!) between and 1 pm and 8 pm for this fanciful festival featuring an epic list of vendors and live music! To top it all off, over a dozen of Richmond's finest and most favorite restaurants are sponsoring the event and providing free transit for festival-goers by way of the 2BNB bus! They've even provided a live tracking map so you can hop on with ease.

7. The 6th Annual GoGreen Garden Festival is happening on Saturday at the Virginia Science Museum from 9 am to 4 pm, rain or shine. There you can find local VA growers with various plants and shrubberies for sale, as well as live music provided by Triad, a wine tasting put on my James River Cellars, and lunch provided by the Boka Tako Truck and Buz and Ned's Barbecue!

8. If that isn't enough to satisfy your green thumb, Strange's is hosting Richmond's First Ever Bonsai Show from 10 am to 5pm. On display will be some incredible bonsai arrangements provided by Richmond's Bonsai Society, and at 1 pm there is a free Bonsai 101 class - all you need to do is register! 9. For those of you that would prefer to stay indoors, it just so happens that this Saturday is National Museum Day! "Well by golly... what is National Museum Day?" you ask? From the official website:

"In the spirit of Smithsonian Museums, who offer free admission everyday, Museum Day is an annual event hosted by Smithsonian magazine in which participating museums across the country open their doors to anyone presenting a Museum Day Ticket...for free."

There are eight local Museums participating, including Maymont, Valentine Richmond History Center and Virginia Historical Society. All you have to do is request a free ticket and indicate which museum you plan on visiting. Piece of cake!

SUNDAY

10. Finish out your weekend at Byrd Park with the Family Peace Festival. From 11 am to 5 pm, the park will host musicians, games, arts and crafts, cultural exhibits and food vendors. The festival aims to promote peace, community, diversity and mutual respect among Richmonders. Read more about the awesome origins of this festival here.

Feast RVA

A very cool and innovative idea for funding creative projects has recently made its way to Richmond. Originally started in Brooklyn, Feast RVA is a local initiative that combines good food, creative people and awesome ideas with small-scale funding. A venue hosts a small number of creatives who bring proposals for a project, business or creative venture of some sort and attendees of the event get to vote and choose their favorite project presented. Anyone interested can purchase tickets to the event (around $25 each), which includes a locally catered meal and drinks while they listen to each creative presentation. At the end of the evening, all of the guests cast their ballot for the best idea and the winning creative leaves with $500 towards their project! Not only do you get to enjoy a great meal and chat with other Richmond creatives, you also get to contribute to someone's dream. It's so simple, yet so brilliant!

From the Feast RVA site, "Since 2009, the Brooklyn FEAST project has raised over $15,000 in support of the arts. Feast RVA is not just an extension of this communal spirit, it’s custom-fitted to Richmond’s unique artistic personality. We’re Richmonders who want to help other Richmonders, and through a culture of generosity, we can make a difference in our city."

Quirk Gallery will host Feast RVA's inaugural event on October 14, from 7 pm to 10 pm, with a meal from The Cellar Door and appetizers from Sticky To-Go-Go. In addition to that awesomeness, the event will feature music by The Bird and Her Consort (which consists of two wonderfully talented Richmonders, Antonia Begonia, "The Bird", and her husband, Jonathan Vassar, who is also one of the founding members of The Listening Room). You can purchase your tickets here and submit an application for your creative idea to be included here. I can't wait to see what great ideas are funded through this!

Fall Organizing Challenge

Temperatures are cooler and there's change in the air. The fall season is upon us and what better time to get organized? I don't know about you, but I always get a surge of motivation to tackle unfinished projects whenever the seasons change.

To help encourage fall decluttering, my Professional Organizing business, Minima, is hosting a "Fall Organizing Challenge" for one week. The challenge kicks off Monday (tomorrow), September 19 at 8 am and runs until Sunday at 5 pm. Somewhere between a hurricane and a monsoon, it's turned into fall. Hello hats, scarves and the coveted boot-wearing weather! This weekend is full of awesome events and great music to help you celebrate the changing season.

1. The current season at the Firehouse Theatre Project (home of the amazing Listening Room) is playing Cat on Hot Tin Roof this evening, and the following two weekends as well. It's been far too long since I've been to the theatre and I think it's about time I make a reappearance. The Firehouse Theatre is such a cozy wonderful atmosphere as well. 2. DJ Big Chair at Balliceaux tonight will be "...reanimating stationary vinyl platters in a rotational manner, bringing forth the sounds contained therein. Most of them will likely cause a toe tapping sensation at the terminus of the right or left foot, depending on how you're standing. 3. From 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, you can get your fill and more of arts and crafts at the Annual 43rd Street Festival in Forrest Hill organized by the 43rd Street Gallery. This year is the festival's 20th Anniversary and they will feature over 70 artists, while maintaining a "casual feel". From Richmond.com, "Since 1991, the event has attracted art aficionados from all over central Virginia to the quaint quarter. Over time, the festival has gained a reputation for bringing compelling efforts from local artists and craftspeople to the forefront." The variety of mediums will include jewelry, paintings and sculpture and include materials from glass to metal to wood. The festival is free and family friendly!

4. After you finish buying all the art and jewelry you can ever want, head over to the Museum District for St. Benedict's Oktoberfest 2011. This festival will actually be taking place all weekend, Friday evening from 5 pm to 10 pm, Saturday from 11 am to 10 pm, and again on Sunday from 12 pm to 6 pm, also free! This festival is full of music, dancing, activities for the whole family, along with numerous food vendors, German and local breweries and wineries. From the website, "Chosen due to the strong German roots of our parish, this German-themed celebration allows attendees the opportunity to enjoy German music, dancing, food, and their beverage of choice." Definitely might have to make a detour for some German brew this evening... (Raj - thanks again for the info!)

5. Should you desire something a little more bloody on Saturday, the 2nd Annual GWAR-B-Q will be held at The National starting at 2 pm. In addition to Richmond's own GWAR and multiple other bands, there will be BBQ cook-offs, the return of The Spew-O-Lympics and American A-hole competitions, a jousting exhibition from the Cutthroats Bike Gang, a Bloody T-Shirt contest, and more. Doors open at 1 pm and tickets are $25 at the door. I've never seen a GWAR show, but I've heard nothing less than epic stories. I mean it's only a few times a year you get to have alien blood spewed on you from a band. Anyone who makes it out to this BBQ music fest, let us know how awesome it is!

6. Balliceaux will be holding it down, yet again, for your dance party needs on Saturday night with SOULPOWER. Mr. Felty and DJ Pari will be spinnin' Funk and soul on 45 rpm vinyl for as long as your feet can handle it. Head on over to Balliceaux at 10:30 pm for this free show. RSVP on Facebook here.

7. Lastly, bring your weekend to a close on Sunday night with the always fun and ever-Irish folks of Flogging Molly at The National. I've seen a couple Flogging Molly shows and I've never left dissatisfied. Put on your kilt and get ready to jig. Show starts at 8 pm and is $25 at the door.

Time Spent

Some very cool things are happening in the world of local rappers right now. Former Richmonder, Matthew Thompson and Ronin Wood have created the video project Time Spent to promote (mostly) unsigned East Coast rappers with no music, fancy lights or camera cuts. From the creators, "We are breaking rap down to its roots. We have crafted 'Time Spent' as a raw and gritty display of rap and rap only. The rules are no beat, no music, no hook, no cuts. We shoot all the videos on VHS with on camera audio."

The site currently has six different artists featured, with many more in line (including a few RVA locals). In addition to promoting underground rap artists (for no profit), they seek to promote other local artists that contribute to their work. Currently their website features illustrations by artist Genesis Crespo and they plan to add information on a local screen print artist who will design Time Spent merchandise.

Both Matthew and Ronin currently reside in Baltimore, attending the Maryland Institute College of Art. Matthew is a film maker and photographer in his free time, as well as a creator of all kinds. Ronin is a graphic designer with a special interest in designing for rap artists.

Together, they have created something they hope will have an impact on how people view and digest rap music.

Oh Cher, your witty words and quirky sense of style still feel relevant today. But anyways, back to toothaches... having one is far from funny, actually it's mostly a pain in the arse. Visiting the dentist and paying for your dental hygiene is even more of a pain. If you are like me, and nearly half of the country, you lack dental insurance and paying out of pocket for check-ups and filings is a serious issue. A couple months ago I had the grand idea to buy a Groupon for a dental check-up and my experiences were less than satisfying. I ended up paying extra fees at the actual visit and once I was given a price for filling a few cavities, I ran out of that office as fast as I could.

Flustered and quite furious, I called up a friend of mine who had just graduated from VCU's Dental School. I remembered something she mentioned about a clinic awhile back and asked her what my options were. Turns out, the dental school offers dental care through their student clinic to anyone who wants or needs dental care - and the best part - the prices are hundreds less than your average small practice. You will pay around $60 for an initial check-up, only $40 for complete x-rays, and about $50 per filing, should you need any. I was relieved to know I could take care of my teeth without taking out a credit card and genuinely happy with my overall experience at the clinic. You will save money, but alas, you probably won't save much time. Since the students need to have their work checked by faculty your visit will take anywhere from two to three hours. Although, if you have less filings than I did, it will probably be shorter. Either way, the money savings was absolutely worth my time. You can call them to set up an initial screening at (804) 828-9190.

So, in case you didn't know, or don't have dental insurance, be sure to check out the clinic at VCU next time you need your pearly whites cleaned - and spread the word! I was shocked by how many people aren't aware of the services available.

Weekend Events!

Hang up that rain jacket and get ready for a sunny & event-saturated weekend to kick off the fall season!

For starters, President Obama will be speaking at the University of Richmond tomorrow morning at 11:30. "What?! Why!?", you ask. Well, he'll be speaking on his latest efforts to jump start the economy and create jobs. The event is free as well as open to the public; however, you'll need to secure a ticket to be enter the Robins Center. See UR's website for additional information on tickets, parking and shuttles.

On Saturday, get your grub on at Whole Foods Market's Food Truck Festival out in Short Pump! Many of Richmond's infamous food carts will be featured at the event, which lasts from noon to 6 pm.

Also on Saturday, the highly anticipated RVA Music Fest will get underway! This city-wide two day event will kick off with a series of "showcases" at various locations and will then carry into Sunday with a main event taking place in Shockoe Bottom at the farmer's market. The two stage lineup boasts an impressive cast including Girl Talk, Best Coast, Diamond Center, No BS Brass Band, Black Girls and many many more talented folks. Check out the official schedule for more roster information. Tickets for the main event will cost you $22 in advance, $30 at the gate.

If you're more of the literary type, Richmond Young Writers is hosting its first ever All-Write, All-Night Writing Marathon at Chop Suey in Carytown! This uber-creative 26.2 hour event features an array of exciting workshops led by several talented Richmonders including both of the RYW founders, a cookout in the evening to fuel participants and an hour of yoga the following morning to rejuvenate tired writer's minds. The event will start at 10 am on Saturday and will run straight through Sunday at 12:12 pm. Good luck to anyone who participates!

And finally, on Sunday, HandsOn Greater Richmond is leading efforts to revitalize our beloved Belle Isle. The event is an open call for volunteers to clean up graffiti and pick up litter as a part of the September 11 National Day of Service, which is a nationally recognized initiative to honor those who were lost and those who served in response to the attacks 10 years ago. If you're interested in pitching in, be sure to check out the official event webpage to reserve a spot and for important information on what to wear, bring and expect.

Broad Street Series V2 | Outdoor Seating

As summer comes to a close and temperatures begin dropping to an incredibly bearable (and downright delightful) mid-80's range, all I want to do is sit outdoors and soak in the last few weeks of warmth. Eating is something I also must do, for obvious reasons, so it's only logical that I attempt to combine the two at least a few times a week. Ever since visiting Paris, I've felt that Broad Street, among others in Richmond, has the most incredible potential to support outdoor sidewalk dining. I realize it's quite absurd to compare Broad Street to the incredible culture and atmosphere of Paris, but a girl can dream, right?

Anyways, a number of great restaurants on Broad Street already take advantage of this incredible opportunity. We've put together a list of our favorites, some of which have hosted outdoor dining for awhile, and others who have created new spaces for you to soak in the last few smells and sounds of summertime.

1. Lift Coffee Shop
Lift has had outdoor seating ever since I have been in Richmond and I can't even count how many lazy Sundays I have spent there people watching and relaxing with friends. Their food is creative, veg friendly, and absolutely delicious. The coffee is spectacular as well. If you're craving something hoppy, they also have a fantastic selection of bottled beer. Go by and relax under the bright green umbrellas this Sunday, I guarantee you'll be glad you did.

2. The Republic
The Republic has recently added an outdoor seating section at the corner of Allison and Broad. They change their menu every few weeks to celebrate the traditional fare of a unique culture or country. Great location for watching your favorite sports team as well. I'm excited to try out the outdoor spots soon.

3. The Empress
I finally visited Empress for lunch just a few weeks ago after months of telling myself I needed to check it out. The food was fantastic, but their recent addition of outdoor tables and chairs has officially made it my new favorite restaurant. I had one of the most incredibly delicious and affordable dinners there about two weeks ago. The service was wonderful, the food was gourmet and the outdoor seating made the night seem slightly magical. I highly recommend taking an evening to check this place out.

4. ~~Cafe Gutenberg~~ {Update: Cafe Gutenberg has since closed, Arcadia is set to open in the Fall.}
I heard a rumor awhile back that Cafe Gutenberg would be closing soon and my heart nearly broke. Turns out, Cafe Gutenberg has merely changed ownership to breathe the life back into this wonderful restaurant. From their website, "The new menu and the interior, with its humble yet long- overdue makeover, offers Richmonders what can sometimes seem so hard to find: warm familiarity and attention to detail, locally-inspired food and drink at an affordable price, and the chance to feel pampered in your jeans and t-shirt." I've eaten at Cafe Gutenberg a few times and the food has never failed to impress me. The outdoor seating is just cozy enough to allow you to enjoy your evening but lively enough to remind you that you're still in Richmond.

5. Sette
Head a little farther east on Broad and you'll discover Sette. What makes Sette's outdoor dining unique is that it's actually off the street, located in a private courtyard beneath crepe myrtles and strands of lights. The atmosphere is amazing, as are the pizzas!

6. Millie's
Any given weekend you'll see a line literally out the door for Millie's famous brunch. Yes, it is that good. I've never gotten there early enough to secure one of the coveted outdoor tables, but it looks divine! Sure, the wait for a table is sometimes an hour or more, but you can sip on their delicious brunch concoctions while you chat it up with friends as you wait outside!

7. Poe's Pub
We just ate at Poe's for the first time about two weeks ago for brunch, and let me say - it is the hidden gem of the Tobacco Row neighborhood. Don't let the herd of motorcycles parked out front fool you; their brunch menu is off-the-charts delicious (and creative to boot!), their outdoor seating area is fantastic and I bet you five dollars if you go once you'll be back for more.

Antiques in Manchester

This past Saturday I had the pleasure of visiting the first Antiques in Manchester (AIM) Saturday market. Antiques in Manchester is an upscale, open-air antique market co-sponsored by Micheal Sparks Design, Ghostprint Gallery and Maurice Beane Studios. From AIM's Facebook page, "Located in a covered walkway between period brick buildings, the venue has a distinctly European flavor. Exhibitors will be displaying a wide variety of quality goods including Mid-Century Modern, 18th and 19th century antiques, architectural elements, Art Deco, Primitives, etc." Each Saturday they will be open from 9 am to 4 pm under the covered walkway beside 205 Hull Street in Richmond's Manchester district.

I was excited to check out the market but honestly was skeptical about how affordable any of the items would be. I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of items and relative affordability of most of them. Furniture pieces ranged from $40 to $350, clothing items from $20 to $80, and small antiques were anywhere from $5 to $400. I imagine if you are a better haggler than me, you could probably talk some of these prices down too. There was something in practically every price range and some incredibly beautiful furniture pieces worth saving for. I will definitely be making a trip out there again soon.

Goodbye Sprout

You can't live in Richmond and not have a constant nagging desire to get more tattoos. We are the third most tattooed city in the country, and I'm honestly pretty proud. With such a high demand for ink in this city, it's no surprise that choosing the right artist and shop for your next permanent piece can be pretty overwhelming. There are literally dozens of incredibly talented tattoo artists in the city, but I wanted to share my experience with a particularly awesome guy and shop.

I spent a fair amount of time researching different artists in the area and when I came across Matt Brotka's work, I stopped looking and picked up the phone. I came in for a consultation appointment and went over my ideas and left him with some artwork. The consultation requires a $50 deposit that will go towards the total price of your tattoo. It also guarantees that Matt, or the other artists, will get compensated for their design time, in case you choose not to get the tattoo. Matt was incredibly kind and listened carefully to my ideas and concerns. He was understanding and patient when I changed my mind about a few things last minute and I ended up with an amazingly detailed graphic line drawing of an owl. His precision and professionalism was amazing. I am beyond happy with the final product and would recommend Matt and the Salvation Tattoo shop without hesitation.

RVA Music Fest

Two weeks from now, the first annual RVA Music Fest will be taking over Richmond with a two day music festival celebrating our city's amazing culture. On Saturday, September 10, a multitude of local and national acts will be playing all across the city at various bars and venues, including The Camel, Balliceaux, NY Deli and Strange Matter. Headlining the show on Sunday, September 11, will be Girl Talk and Best Coast (!!!). 18th Street will be closed off between Grace Street and Main Street to host the two large stages as RVA Music Fest takes over Shockoe Bottom from 2 pm to 10 pm. Tickets for Saturday's shows will be available at the various venues, but you can purchase advance tickets for Sunday's show here. In addition to Girl Talk and Best Coast, the two main stages will feature The Diamond Center, No BS Brass Band, Black Girls and more. There will also be a DJ tent all day on Sunday to keep your dancin' shoes happy.

I'm driving all the way back from a wedding in Maryland on Sunday just to make sure I see this show! Hope to see you there too!

Broad Street Series V1 | Nick's International Food Market

On the corner of Monroe Street and West Broad lives one of the best sandwich shops in the city. A small and modest produce market and deli, Nick's International Food Market has been a staple of Broad Street for decades. I stop by Nick's at least a few times a month for their incredible tuna sandwich on toasted wheat bread. You will be greeted by the smiling and always witty Tony (pictured above), who will take your order at the back counter. Tony is the kind of guy who will remember your name and order after a few weeks of stopping by. Grab a drink and some chips and peruse the incredible assortment of spices and international ingredients while you wait.

Ingredients galore!

The original Nick arrived in the US in 1951 and his store is now run by his sons, Manuel and Phillip. Nick's market is the kind of place that reminds you why it's important to know your neighbors and greet strangers on the sidewalk. Not to mention, the food is great and the service is warm. I'm a big fan of the tuna sammich but I've also heard awesome things about the Greek salad with anchovies (just try it!). Lastly, if you're on a budget, a sandwich typically will only run you about $5.

Stop by Nick's and support one of the last few surviving businesses that are holding down Broad Street!

RVA is for Bike Lovers

A little over a year ago when I was looking for a simple, light-weight, affordable bike to get around the city, I came across Ed Edge (pictured above) and Christ Cycles. Ed and his amazing team of bicycle building vegans created a completely custom bike for me for only $200. A year later, Ed and his team have expanded to offer even better custom bikes (higher quality parts, more light-weight, and more options) starting at $299. You get to choose the colors, gears, wheels, handle bars, the whole deal - and it's yours to ride in less than three weeks. You honestly cannot beat this deal anywhere else in Richmond. Christ Cycles also offers high quality bike parts for affordable prices under the company Cute Bikes.

The whole process is done online (check out the ORDER tab on their website), but if you have any questions, just shoot them an e-mail (shop@christcycles.com). They are very responsive and super helpful. Not to mention, if you purchase one of their custom bikes, you get FREE maintenance for LIFE. I just took my bike by there the other day and they replaced my pedals for free and in under 20 minutes. (Thanks guys!) Their shop is in the Museum District, on the corner of Franklin and Cleveland, but shoot them an e-mail if you plan to stop by. Since their business is mostly online, they rarely keep regular hours at the shop.

Ed Edge started Christ Cycles in 2008 as a non-profit with the selfless goal of offering quality bikes at cost (and sometimes even below cost) to anyone who needed one. Ed works as an EMT for at least 70 hours a week and puts almost 80% of his income into this incredible company. From their website, "Christ Cycles is a small not-for-profit company dedicated to blessing people with good bikes and good health. We want people to love their bike and use it more often. For this reason, we offer people the ability to customize their very own bike. Regular bike use will in turn, help people financially, improve their health, and is far better for the environment." Richmond Magazine also wrote a great article on Ed and Christ Cycles back in March.

Seriously think about checking out Christ Cycles if you're in need of a new ride. I promise you won't be disappointed. And if all of that still isn't enough, one more reason to meet the Christ Cycles crew is these two furry friends who hang out at the shop:

Sorry, I couldn't really help myself with that title. Every Wednesday for the past few weeks I have spent my evenings playing pick-up volleyball in the backyard oasis of Babe's of Carytown. At the corner of Auburn and Cary, Babe's hosts laid back pick-up volleyball in their backyard sand court every Wednesday night. Not to worry if you have little to no skill - everyone is awesomely friendly and happy to teach. Still not interested in playing? Have a seat on the deck and enjoy $6 pitchers of PBR. It doesn't really get much better.

Best Friends Day 10

'Tis the season to celebrate friendship! Tonight starts off Best Friends Day 10: a weekend full of bands, friends and half naked pool partying.

Best Friends Day is a Richmond tradition that started in 2002 with a group of kids celebrating friendship at Hadad's Lake. Over the past 10 years, it has exploded into a weekend long extravaganza of music and community, with the culminating event still at Hadad's Lake on Saturday.

There will be shows all around the city Thursday through Sunday. On Saturday, $25 will get you into Hadad's for some lake swimming and more music-packed action (including No BS Brass Band and Against Me!). To top if off, the To the Bottom & Back bus will be providing free transportation to and from Hadad's!

One of my favorite things about the summer is the abundance of farmer’s markets across and around the city. Nothing beats fresh and local real food. The one draw back of shopping at farmer’s markets is you can never seem to get all of your essentials in one place. Well, Relay Foods is here to solve that problem while saving you time and gas money.

Purchasing from Relay is as simple as shopping on the online store (where almost every local farm and food business is represented), checking out, and then picking up all your goodies from one convenient location! There are multiple locations around Richmond to choose from and you can stop by anytime between 3 pm and 7 pm. You can shop anytime during the week, as long as you make your purchase before midnight the day before you want to pick up your order.

Fourth Annual Jonny Z Fest This Saturday!

On Saturday, from noon to 5 pm, make sure to stop by the 200 block of Shields Avenue (in front of Joe's Inn and Shield's Market) to celebrate art, music, and community in the RVA! Tons of local art and craft vendors will be there from the Bizarre Market along with food from Joe’s Inn, Shield’s Market, Lamplighter and more. WRIR will be hosting local musicians including Josh Small, Photosynthesizers, and No BS! Brass Band. This event is family friendly and FREE! Ten percent of all arts and craft sales will go towards ART 180.

Two super talented friends of mine will have a table there selling handmade cards and recycled palette picture frames, along with a few of my own handmade things!

More about Jonny Z (1980-2007): Artist Jon Zanin was a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University, and had become a fixture on the art and music scene in Richmond. He helped run the Bizarre Art Market near the VCU campus and had worked at a number of restaurants, including Joe’s, where he waited tables. After his death in 2007 at age 26, The Jonny Z Fest was created to honor his spirit and promote art, music, community and friendship in Richmond.

Alright folks, put on your socializing pants 'cause this weekend is chock full of fun events!

Kick off your weekend right with a healthy dose of First Fridays! For our especially thirsty readers, Gallery5 will be hosting AugustFest: A Taste of Virginia Micro Brews starting at 7 pm. Available at the event will be a showing of craft beers from Virginia breweries including Legend Brewing Co., Starr Hill, Roanoke Railhouse Brewery and more! While you sip and socialize, special performances will be provided by Birds and Arrows, Brett Harris and Skylar Gudasz and the Ugly Girls. The event is 21+ only and free for entry, however tastings will range from $1 to $3 each.

Also as a part of First Fridays, join local architecture firm BCWH as they celebrate their 25th birthday at Studio 8! On display will be a number of their most influential projects as well as selected artwork from their talented staff. Doors open to the public at 7:30 pm.

For my inaugural Minimalist post, I decided to write about something that I am constantly dreaming up new ideas for: DIY projects. Living in the city on a tight budget and being surrounded by incredible designers and talented artists, it’s hard not to get a little jealous of the things you can’t afford. My solution: make it yourself. All of the projects I am going to show you cost me less than $50 each (and most of them less than $20!).

1.Fabric-covered lampshade. My previous roommate left me this great lamp and I perused thrift stores until I found the perfect shape of shade I wanted. Ended up buying one from Diversity for only $3. I glued about 1/4 yard of fabric around it with tacky glue. Total project cost me less than $15. This tutorial is basically what I did.

2. Pillow cover. I had some old maroon pillows on my couch that were driving me crazy so I decided to make covers for them. I got a great deal on the upholstery fabric at JoAnn (45% off!) and used this tutorial to make them.

3. Wall decal. This project isn’t technically DIY, since I didn't create the decal, but I consider it an awesomely minimal solution to no painting rules in apartments. I ordered it from Amazon for only THREE dollars. Seriously. Also, it was crazy simple to put on the wall and peels right off!

4. Chalkboard. I made this from the top of an old Ikea coffee table that was given to me by a friend who was moving. I simply removed the legs and painted it with chalkboard paint and hung it on the wall! SO easy! Biggest expense here is the chalkboard paint, which will run you about $16 for a quart (at Lowe’s).

5. Reupholstered dining chairs. I purchased these great metal leg chairs from the thrift store for $20 for the pair. I made a cushion out of stuffing and felt and then pulled fabric over the top and stapled it to the bottom of the seat. Total cost was around $45 including the chairs.

6. Painted rug. I had seen tutorials for painting rugs for a few months and decided I must try this. I purchased a rug from Big Lots ($20) and used some left over paint from a dresser I painted awhile back. I absolutely LOVE the final product. I used this tutorial to guide me.

7. Chair makeover. I got this chair on Craigslist for $5 but it had a ridiculous office chair base with wheels, which I immediately removed. I found an old table by a trashcan in my alleyway and removed the legs and then added them to my chair. It took me all of 30 minutes... it was a good day to say the least.

For the next six Thursdays, starting this Thursday, August 4, i.e.* will be hosting a free SHOP CLASS series. The events will take place from 5:30 pm to 7:15 pm in the The Marvin Lang Building, 1623 W Broad St (next door to The Camel). From the invite:

"Organized and hosted by Peter Fraser, Ansel Olson and John Sarvay, each SHOP CLASS session is designed to be a two-hour, hands-on discovery zone... We're creating the container, the invitation, the rough design. We're inviting a dozen RVA creatives to provide the content, the passion and their unique perspective. We're inviting you to shape, influence and imprint each evening with your own sensibilities."

TRS Mixtape 11

Okay okay. So I've been writing A LOT about RVA indie music lately. I suppose the blog often reflects my current activities and pursuits. There is just so much musical talent in our city right now it blows my mind sometimes. More over - most of the shows are free, so it won't cost you more than your bar tab to attend. I always encourage a friendly donation though - musicians have to eat, too!

If you don't hear about shows from us, you can always check out The Richmond Scene website. They just released the TRS Mixtape 11, featuring the work of some of RVA's favorite local musicians over the past year. Have a listen - if you like what you hear, attend a show. I'm really not sure what my experience in Richmond would be like without some of these people and their awesome skills.

Couch Surfing & Cob Ovens

Two Saturdays ago I ended up at a Couch Surfing potluck in the Fan. I'd heard of Couch Surfing before, but didn't really know what it was all about. From what I understand, it's a worldwide project about bridging cultural gaps and making traveling more accessible. The website has profiles for surfers (travelers) and hosts (people offering accommodations) to connect. As a surfer, you can stay with a host for a minimal cost (one traveler mentioned $10/day), so all you have to cover is food and travel expenses. One woman at the potluck was just settling in from a whirlwind three month tour through Europe! What a liberating and minimalist way to live. Right up my alley.

At said potluck, we built a cob oven (for baking bread and pizza) together:

TRS Birthday Party

The Richmond Scene (TRS) is a social networking site for RVA music. My buddy Chris Payne (who also helps run The Listening Room series with The Greater Richmond Foundry) started the site two years ago. Since then, it's become the hub for musicians, artists and their fans to stay in tune with what is happening in our city.

To celebrate, they are partying at The Camel on Sunday night and man, what a line up! Starting at 7 pm, Dogs on Main Street, Dave Watkins, and Snowy Owls will perform. The night will wrap up with Richmond's well known jazz band NoBS! Brass. Chris says that the party on Sunday, "is not just about celebrating the site, as much as it is celebrating the individuals in our city making great music." Today I had to drop off some donations for an organizing client at Diversity Thrift. I always like to pop in and see what Mid-Century Modern (MCM) furniture pieces they have - about a year ago I found an upholstered Eames DCM for $5, which sells for $250 on eBay! While it may not be an Eames chair, this retro sofa bed (currently at Diversity) has a lot of potential:

The color is much nicer in person.

Yep, just $59!

Ultimately it needs to be reupholstered, but it has great lines and would look very crisp with neutral furnishings and some graphic patterned pillows. The sleeper sofa aspect is handy for urban dwellings that lack a guest bedroom.

Moxie Movers

Last night at The Listening Room, Birdie Busch (a TLR alum from Philly) was onstage telling us about her friend, Jesse, who recently moved from Philly and started up Moxie Movers in Richmond. It's a moving company that focuses on employing musicians. As Birdie described it, "Most jobs aren't cool with you accepting a position and then telling them you need off the coming Thursday through Friday to tour." Moxie helps musicians pursue their art while allowing them to pay the bills with a flexible schedule. Apparently there's a Moxie in Philly as well that has employed many indie musicians, such as members from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah:

So, next time you have a move, consider giving them a try. I've heard great things, and am always in favor of supporting local artists!

Top five reasons why I like (er, love) what I do, in no particular order:

1. Organizing is one of my favorite things. People pay me to do it for/with them. Win win.

2. On the days when I'm not with clients, I get to work from home in my yoga pants.

3. I'm my own boss. I do things my own way.

4. I get to expense cool things like an iPad and new Pumas for work (legit, I promise).

5. I make my clients' lives better. There's not much more satisfying than seeing how stoked (and often relieved) they are at the end of an intense session.

Yay!

Starting my own business has been one of the best life changes I've made thus far. I highly recommend taking the risk if you have a great idea to start something new. Also, I've been making myself available for coffee chats about entrepreneurship (usually at Lamplighter) if anyone would like to pick my brain!

Weekend Update

Hey kids, I haven't wanted a weekend this badly in a long time! I know some of you have had your Independence Day plans set in concrete for months but for those of you non-planners out there, here are a few ideas.

Tomorrow, Friday, is Freedom First Friday and Steady Sounds is hosting The First Daze of Summer: Photography by Kate Jennings. Miss Jennings and Cameron Lewis photographed the latest Need Supply Co. summer lookbook and this is, I believe, her first solo photography show. Stop by anytime after 6 pm tomorrow, July 1!

Also tomorrow evening is the Gallery5 live music benefit extravaganza, Under The Covers, where four bands will pay tribute to Weezer, Zeppelin, The Pretenders and BAD ASS power pop. The $5 cover benefits Gallery5 and WRIR, our awesome local, independent, radio station. Captain Slappy's hot dogs, as well as a cash bar, are available.

After you get your photography and cover band fix, Strange Matter hosts Creepoid, The Nervous Ticks, Nothing and Sports Bar. Not too far away, The Camel has NoBS! Brass. Two very different shows that are going to be equally satisfying - pick your poison wisely! Both shows cost $7 and start around 10 pm.

If you need a break from the holiday heat this weekend, consider taking in a movie at the Westhampton Theater. Woody Allen's Midnight In Paris and Terrence Malick's Tree of Life are both showing through the weekend - both films look fantastic!

The Black Sheep, at 901 W Marshall St, just announced its summer menu. Just don't go for Saturday brunch because I don't want to have to wait for a table.

Saturday evening Balliceaux brings you Graybeard's Afro-Pop Dance Explosion! Dance to amazing Caribbean, Latin and African music for free while sipping a Culprit that, while definitely not free, is sure to get you in the mood. Could be the mood that gets you into trouble, but that's alright.

And of course, there will be fireworks. What would this weekend be without them? Just a regular weekend unless you live in Montana where apparently fireworks happen every weekend. Richmond.com has a great listing of fireworks displays, parades and other holiday festivities - be safe and be fun!

Staying Sane June

KZ - In many summers past, I've chosen productivity over enjoying the awesome weather. In reality, the to do list will never end, so I've decided to take summer back this year and relax as much as business will allow. I've been hitting Texas Beach about once a week and enjoying late night events with friends. It helps that I love my job, but I've also been drinking a Carnation Breakfast Essentials drink every morning that I have to work. Even if I was out until 2 am the night before, the drink wakes me right up and I'm on my game.

ES - I've been struggling to come up with my "Staying Sane" post this month but finally realized that what has kept me sane this month are a few good friends. I've had a month with a lot of highs but a few significant lows and on a couple of occasions called up said friends and just, basically, said I needed help. I hate asking for help but those few friends were totally the right people at the right time to distract, help and comfort me till I got through the slump. Cheers to them, they know who they are.

EJ - When I think back to the happenings of the last month, the last word that comes to mind is "sane". Between the awesome Richmond events and festivals, weekends full of traveling and visitors, recharged side projects, seemingly endless birthday celebrations for all my Gemini friends, and a rigorous training schedule, I'm not even entirely sure where the last month went. Much like Emily Smith, I too was struggling with what to write for "Staying Sane" this month- until my family came to visit last weekend. It's very rare for my mom, dad, brother and myself to find ourselves in the same room, and even more rare for us to have the time to really catch up and enjoy ourselves. Having them all here with me was therapeutic and grounding, which was absolutely the perfect ending to a chaotic, but stellar month. Thank you, family, for keeping me sane.

Island Fun!

Check it out: The Ol' Power Plant on Belle Isle is being turned into a concert venue this afternoon! A small group of amazing people have organized a day of music that begins at noon and goes till around 8 pm. BYOB, BYOdog and acoustic sets only! It's free to all and accessible by the foot/bike trails on Belle Isle. If you're unfamiliar with this little island in the middle of the James River, you can park at the parking lot on Tredegar Street (north side of the river) and cross to the island via the pedestrian foot bridge. Of course, you can also bike this way. Today's Summer Solstice Jam line up lists 12 bands including my favorites Canary Oh Canary and Diamond Center!

Happenings This Week, Part II

It's almost the weekend! This week's Minimalist recommended events were so packed that we had to split it up into two posts. Yay for summertime.

If you missed Tuesday's The Listening Room, be sure to check out next month's event at the Firehouse Theatre Project on July 19 at 7:30 pm. South China (Portland, Maine) and Small Sur (Baltimore) performed at this month's event - it was like a massage for your ears. South China had a less poppy Feist feel and Small Sur had a minimalist/subdued Band of Horses / Fleet Foxes vibe. Both bands were really enjoyable. I was able to grab drinks and hot dogs with the gents from Small Sur afterward while we tried to determine whether or not RVA was in fact on fire or under zombie attack. What was up with all the smoke/fog and firetrucks in the Fan on Tuesday night - did anyone else notice? Random side note - May's TLR guests, Brown Bird, looked EXACTLY like our very own Emily Smith. Woah, doppelgänger.

This Friday night, pay $5 for five bands at Strange Matter at 929 W Grace St in the Fan. Manorlady, Canary oh Canary, Hoax Hunters, The Snowy Owls and Adah will be performing. Richmond's Rice House

Minimalist is a little late on our game with this one, but we thought you should know - one of Richmond's historic gems, the Rice House, has been renovated with the help of the Science Museum of Virginia (located in Richmond).

"The home was built in the mid 1960s by well-known West Coast architect, Richard Neutra. It was donated to the Science Museum of Virginia Foundation in the mid 90s by the owner and former American Ambassador to Australia, Walter Rice. But for the past few years, the home stood vacant. That's when the Science Museum of Virginia decided to step in."

Happenings This Week, Part I

Tonight, Tuesday June 21, behold the wonder that is The Listening Room! The Firehouse Theatre hosts one or more bands as a part of this monthly music series and never charges a cover (donations always appreciated). With a focus on singer/songwriters and an intimate setting, it's an opportunity to get to know some of our region's musical talent! The show begins at 7:30 pm.

Also tonight, Could Richmond Be the Next Portland? brings internationally known author Mia Birk, the former Bicycle Program Manager of Portland, Oregon, to Richmond to discuss the driving force behind Portland's efforts to make the change from four wheels to two. Eric Weis, Trail Coordinator for the East Coast Greenway (ECG), will also be presenting his vision on developing the 3000 mile route from Maine to Florida. Now over 25% complete, this off road facility - which passes through the heart of Richmond – will connect the 25 major cities along the East Coast. Be at the Science Museum of Virginia by 7 pm and make sure to register for your free ticket!

Wednesday, June 22, the Modern Richmond Tour and the Virginia Center for Architecture host the second film of their summer film series Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman. You've seen Mr. Shulman's photographs, they've brought to the world some of the best architecture of the 1950s and 1960s, and this film brings Mr. Shulman's humor, talent and experiences to you. Admission is $10 ($8 VCA members) and the film begins at 7 pm. Register online or by phone.

Also on Wednesday, the Anderson Gallery continues their happy hour series with the musical performance, Now Playing: The Bird & Her Consort. Antonia and Jonathan Vassar use accordion, guitar and classical voice in their performance beginning at 5 pm. Enjoy the gallery, fantastic music and, of course, great company and a cash bar. The event is free.

And as if your Wednesday wasn't already packed, Balliceaux and Spacebomb Records present Joe Westerlund, the Megafaun band member currently in Richmond to record an album with our local Spacebomb boys! The show begins around 10 pm and the cover is $5.

Monday, June 13, Canary Oh Canary, Now Sleepyhead and Sleepy Vikings take the stage at Sprout! Also playing at Sprout this week - David Shultz and Jonathan Vassar (both of Ophelia), Nelly Kate and Broken Fences on Thursday. Both shows begin at 10 pm.

Balliceaux brings you several great shows this week including Miramar, Fuzzy Baby / Blasco and Bio Ritmo on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, respectively. See the Balliceaux events page for details - all shows are $5 and begin around 10:30 pm.

Wednesday, June 15, Modern Richmond visits the National Memorial for Organ and Tissue Donors at 700 N 4th St. The free tour begins at 5:30 pm and includes an introduction by SMBW's Chris Fultz. The MRT facebook invitation describes the project's use of water in the following way:

"A wall of tears recognizing deceased loved ones greets visitors as they enter the memorial, a sculptural spring representing the individual's Gift of Life contribution is symbolized by ripples from a single drop of water, and an expressive waterfall which is fed by the spring celebrates the exponentially positive impact that the choice of organ donation has on our society."

Friday, June 17, the VMFA is showing the film, a woman like that by filmmakers Ellen Weissbrod and Melissa Powell. This 93 minute film takes you into the life and work of 17th century Italian baroque artist Artemisia Gentileschi who painted, among many works, the Venus and Cupid which is on display at the VMFA. Footage of rarely seen works by Gentileschi (private collections) are included in the film and there will be opportunity for Q&A at the film's end. Be there by 6:30 pm - $5 for VMFA members and $8 for non-members. For those of you that are not yet members...really?

Sunday, June 19, enjoy a pizza and some summery sounds by Julie Karr and Frankzig at Bellytimber. If you're unsure which pizza to try, my recommendations include the Mexican (with chorizo) and the White Belly with its fontina, parmesan and ricotta yumminess.

Also on Sunday, The Camel brings you The Flail - a fantastic, NYC-based, jazz quintet. Their latest album Live at Smalls exhibits all original compositions. The show begins at 10 pm according to the venue website but in Camel-speak that means well after. I mean, I'm not fluent in Camel but seriously, those guys take their time.

Last but not least, Ghostprint Gallery is still showing the Richmond Illustrator's Club Juried Show this week and through June 25. Get in there!

Discoveries at Texas Beach

Yesterday I realized something pretty profound about myself.

I don't hate the outdoors, after all.

Being a minimalist, one might think, "Obviously, she likes the outdoors." Hello, Henry Thoreau? Walden? Nope. When I was a little girl, I had several negative Girl Scout camping and hiking experiences that have lead me to believe in my adult life that I dislike outdoorsy activities (with the exception of things involving water and and lounging, of course). I kind of like skiing, but not really. Playing in the snow has always been cool with me. But hiking? Camping? Being in the woods? No way!

I've always disliked this aspect of myself, because everyone I enjoy spending time with seems to like the outdoors. After yesterday, I realize I do too. I finally understand the draw.

It all started last week when I was meeting up with my friend Chase at Texas Beach. It was a crowded, sunny day and he had hiked pretty far through the woods to find a good rock without lots of people. I was so intimidated by the rocks I had to scale, and various precipices I had to maneuver. I found myself pouting out loud at several points during the hike. During our trip back, I slowly became more confident in my abilities and began to enjoy leaping from rock to rock and loved the feeling of success from conquering the landscape. It reminded me of my days as a gymnast way back when.

Yesterday sealed the deal. Another friend, Alida, and I hiked out to that very same spot (no whining this time). Chase, fellow blogger Em Smith and our friend Dan met up with us. After a few hours, we were thinking about leaving when a somewhat sudden rainstorm blew through. We quickly packed up our things and raced back to shore. In the past, I would have been very uncomfortable getting wet. Yesterday, I just let go and embraced it. It was an amazing, liberating feeling like that of being a kid again. I raced ahead of our group and leaped from rock to rock and across tree roots with agility. It felt like we were in some kind of tropical rain forest.

The key to my most recent discovery was letting go of certain self-perceptions. We're all capable of a lot more than we think. Once I decided I could enjoy the outdoors, I did.

The BIG Show takes place on Wednesday, June 8, between 6 and 9 pm at Plant Zero. See and hear work created by Richmond's young artists during the ART180 spring 2011 season. Enjoy paintings, prints and drumming, as well as theatrical performances with complimentary refreshments. The evening is free, family-friendly and sure to inspire!

Thursday is a great night for happy hour at Joe's Inn. Oh-so conveniently (for me) located at 205 N Shields Ave, Joe's is offering $3 house wines and $2 tap beers/highballs between 3 and 6 pm.

Friday, June 10, Bio Ritmo and Ikebe Shakedown play The Camel. The show begins at 9 pm and tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.

A little later Friday night, join DJ Moredecai and DJ Ant Boogz for "Friday Night Live" at The Republic where they'll be spinning hip-hop, funk and soul all night long.

It's time for the 12th Annual James River Regional Cleanup! This Saturday, June 11, join the Friends of The James River Park as we clean up approximately 70 miles along the river. There are 13 clean-up sites making this opportunity accessible to those of us in Richmond and beyond. The day begins at 9 am, concludes at 1 pm and includes a complimentary lunch for volunteers. Last year's clean-up involved over 1,000 volunteers yielding over 500 bags of trash and 300 bags of recyclables. Boaters and walkers are welcome; see the above link for all other details.

Time flies when you're the hilariously sexy ladies of the Richmond Varietease! It's been two years since they introduced us to their unique brand of burlesque and this Saturday, June 11, they're hosting a fabulous Two Year Anniversary Show at The Canal Club. Lounge Wear: A Keepsake?

I was working with an organizing client yesterday to pare down her wardrobe. I started the morning by sorting all of her clothing into categories: blouses, t-shirts, pants, shorts, skirts, dresses, off-season, etc. This took about three hours, as there was a substantial amount of clothing we were working with. And yes, we pulled it ALL out. Every last thread was sorted between her bed surface and a folding card table she'd borrowed from a friend. Our mission was to donate or consign 50%.

She started with blouses and made quick decisions, effortlessly eliminating about 1/3 of what she had. We would do a second pass later to pull the additional 20%. I was on fold/hang duty. We moved through several other categories with similar efficiency until we hit lounge wear. She moved quickly through the category, but only pulled one or two pieces for donation. That's when I had to do a bit of coaching. I suggested we pair down lounge wear to one laundry cycle's worth, so about seven pairs each of cozy pants and t-shirts (which would be generous). She simply didn't have the drawer space to keep it all and still be organized.

We talked a bit about why it was hard for her to part with these pieces - she'd had many of them for years and the cotton had worn soft, bringing extra comfort through sick days, kitty cuddle time and more. After playing "tough and hard (but still friendly)" organizer for awhile, we were able to pair it down to ten t-shirts and about four pairs of pants each for warm and cold seasons. Not bad! At the end of the day, her clothing fit comfortably into her drawers and hanging space (and was organized by color and style for easy selection). My car was loaded with seven trash bags full of clothing for donation and a large plastic bin for consignment. Mission accomplished.

As we were having the lounge wear sentimentality conversation, I remembered another client who had the exact same challenge. We were sorting through her wardrobe and just like yesterday's client, she was breezing through decisions until we hit her old hoodies and sweatpants. So many memories were attached to those pieces. It's interesting - would lounge wear be considered a keepsake then? I'm having trouble with the idea, but I did allow my client from yesterday to store an old ski t-shirt that no longer fit in her keepsake box.

Summer-like temperatures, friends and events galore... it's a solid week ahead, Richmonders!

"And Their Music Lives On…A Recital Presenting Music by Composers Suppressed by the Nazis" is a free concert hosted by the Richmond Symphony on Tuesday, May 31st, 7 pm at the Virginia Holocaust Museum at 2000 E Cary St. Don't miss an opportunity to hear pianist David J.L. Fisk and violinist Jocelyn Adelman perform.

Balliceaux is hosting several shows this week including Fight the Big Bull on Wednesday, No BS! Brass Band on Thursday, Amazing Ghost on Friday and Meschiya Lake + The Little Big Horns (Meschiya Lake website) on Saturday. Meschiya Lake = New Orleans, killer vocals and what else, the tuba! These shows begin at 10 or 10:30 pm - see Balliceaux's facebook page for details.

June 3 is First Friday and one of my favorite galleries, Ghostprint Gallery, is hosting the Richmond Illustrator's Club 4th Juried Show. Stop by between 7 and 10 pm.

If you're not at Balliceaux on Saturday night for Meschiya Lake, then head to Sprout at 1 N Morris St in the Fan to hear the sweet sounds of Fuzzy Baby and Miwa Gemini. This free show starts at 10 pm; see the facebook event page for details.

Broad Appetit returns this Sunday, June 5, to downtown Broad Street between Monroe and Adams Streets! $3 a plate lets you try Ettamae's Cafe, India K'raja, and Lady N'awlins in one afternoon.

The Greek Festival is here! Thursday, June 2, through Sunday, June 5, you can get your fill of spanakopita, souvlaki, kataifi (my favorite) and baklava, just to name a few. Near the intersections of Malvern and Grove Avenues in the Museum District, the annual festival offers food and performances of many types.

Staying Sane May

Each month, Minimalist writers share how we "stay sane" in an increasingly fast-paced world. Read our May reflections below.

KZ - This month I've started designating one day a week for reading (usually Sunday). Whether it be my copy of Real Simple or Inc. (small business 'zine), a novel or an organizing book, I feel refreshed, relaxed and more knowledgeable afterward. With the warmer weather, my reading has been taking place on my back porch with a glass of Simply Lemonade (or, as many of you know - straight from the jug). As a result of a recent Real Simple reading day, my diet improved! I prefer to have five or so snacks a day rather than three big meals, which is apparently healthier. Check out this article - "24 Nutritious (and Tasty) Snacks". So far I have tried the cucumber with Swiss cheese as well as the Melba toast with cream cheese and dried cranberries. Food for me has to be quick and simple (I don't enjoy cooking, or the mess it makes) and these combos are right on the mark.

ES - I'm experiencing a lovely transition at the moment between a hectic school semester and a summer break in the letterpress studio. Recently, as I finished school projects, final exams and several community events in which I was involved, I found myself wanting to start new projects that over the past six months I'd put aside. Then I realized I was creating a hectic summer schedule with, again, little time for leisure. I scrapped the list and went hiking in the mountains instead and since then haven't thought about any new projects but instead have spent several fantastic days cooking, eating with friends, reading fiction, hiking, laying out at the River and Byrd Park, watching movies and ok, well, I have purged my closet. That was only because I couldn't find my Nalgene bottle and swore it was buried in a box beneath my summer sandals that needed to be unearthed anyway! So, my staying sane tip this month is to give yourself time to do the little things that are calming, relaxing and fun. They're usually the inexpensive things that get pushed aside when our schedules are packed so enjoy them for what they are, when you can.

EJ - As Minimalist readers are well aware by now, I've been a chronic list maker nearly my entire life (or at least since I could write!) This is something that Miss KZ and I both have in common, and not all too long ago she made the transition to digital planning, organization, and list making. I remember one particular conversation we had where she tried to sell me the benefits of switching to digital list-making, and I just couldn't fathom finding the same satisfaction and success as I do when I cross items off a hand written list.

Well, dear readers, I have been proven wrong. This month I discovered a handy (and free!) website called TEUXDEUX which is a very simply and beautifully designed list-maker's dream. It's interface is ultra-easy to use, and it's accessible not only via computer, but also on the go with your smart phone. The iPhone app is very elegant, and is available in the app store for just $2.99.

I have many friends that only download free apps, but for the price this is a super useful tool that I've been happy to incorporate into my daily activities. Infact, it's kept my left hand free of scribbled-ink lists; although it won't be replacing my hand written post-it lists entirely :]

This weekend is Memorial Day! I hope all of you have something fun planned. (I'll be reuniting with some old college friends in Baltimore). In the meantime, here are a few fun happenings around town to keep you distracted until vacation time.

Wednesday, May 25 from 7 to 8:30 pm, Modern Richmond is hosting a film screening of Modern Views: A Conversation on Northwest Modern Architecture at the Virginia Center for Architecture located at 2501 Monument Ave. There's a $10 admission and our very own Emily Smith will be introducing the film! Thursday night is gonna be great. Sprout is hosting a free show (donations suggested) featuring Cinnamon Band (of Harrisonburg - recently toured with Handsome Furs), The Snowy Owls (of Richmond) and Silversmiths (of Richmond). "The Snowy Owls have been observed as both solitary and social creatures. A single individual has been heard dissolving pop songs into enveloping sonic landscapes - a behavior also noted in other species such as the Yo La Tengo. When they gather in groups, the sounds range from sparse and dreamy to gritty and energetic, similar to Bedhead and Idaho varieties. Their vocalizations are typically hushed, creating intrigue through lyrical vignettes."

Friday night, Balliceaux is hosting its third 1930s themed dance party - PLF Presents SPEAKEASY! Come dressed in your best fedoras, suspenders and/or flapper garb. If you're anything like me, you have grandiose ideas of trying new places to dine, but then fall into the same old routine when its time to pull the trigger. So as you can imagine, I was delighted to stumble upon a great Richmond Happy Hour search engine put together by Richmond.com. You can search for local food and beverage deals by neighborhood, day of the week, and time frame, and it even includes reviews from other patrons! How cool is that?!

And... you can also download a free app for your smartphone which offers the same searchability. It's called Happy Hours, and it's available for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry. Try it out!

National Bike to Work Day

As many of you are already aware, May is National Bike Month... and tomorrow, Friday May 20, is National Bike to Work Day! So tonight, pump up those tires, oil those chains, and dust off those helmets, cause the forecast for tomorrow looks like it'll be the perfect day for a ride!

If you're a less experienced rider and would feel more comfortable riding to work in a group, well then you're in luck! There are organized rides taking place at six locations across the city, which will depart at 6:30 am and arrive at Monroe Park at 7:15 am. Mayor Dwight Jones will then speak and lead a group ride to the Capital! Please see this flyer for more information on the group rides. And as always, if you're out of practice its a great idea to brush up on your bicycle etiquette before you embark on any two-wheeled journey. Ride safe!

We're a little late this week, but there's still a ton happening! It's a great week for minimalist/indie folk music indeed.

Last night was The Listening Room at the Firehouse Theatre Project. If you weren't there, be sure to make it next month on Tuesday, June 21 from 7:30 to 10 pm. I had the pleasure of grabbing drinks with Small Houses from Michigan after last night's show. Rad kids - good music. Have a listen.

Thursday night is Vandaveer with Ferraby Lionheart and The Low Branches at the Sound of Music Recording Studios at 209 N Foushee St. Doors are at 7 pm and the show starts at 8. Farewell AMV

Co-writer Miss Anne Marie Vastano has officially left us for the big 'ole District of Columbia. We'll miss her lots and wish her the best in her new ventures up North!

2. Uh-mazing shoe collection.

3. St. Francis of Richmond (patron saint of animals).

4. Inventor of the term "zeard " (zit beard).

5. ...and the "zustache".

7. Has really, really cute "stink faces".

8. Has one of the best Mid-Century Modern collections in town.

9. Dancin' machine!

10. Would totally beat Pamela Anderson to hostess for the upcoming vegan cooking show - while wearing one of Pam's eco-friendly bikinis.

Virginia Modern is semi-new website/blog all about modern design in Virginia. Awesome! From their website:

"VA Modern was created in January 2011 to showcase and document architecture, art, and design throughout Virginia and into the extended Chesapeake Bay region. It's that time of year again! Registration for the 2011 Marathon Training Team is well underway! Are your running shoes collecting dust while you daydream of completing this 26.2 mile feat? Do you love WRIR 97.3, our local independent radio station, as much as I do? If so, their pledge drive is happening now. Straight from the WRIR website:

"In the six years that WRIR has been on the air, it has established itself as the gold standard for community radio in the country. Not only are we the largest and most successful LPFM in the country, when congress and the senate was deciding whether or not they wanted to expand the Prometheus Radio Project (the bill that allows for licencing LPFM radio stations across the country), WRIR was cited as a shining example of the bill's success."

Interested in sustainability as it pertains to social equity, food, energy, economy, environment and transportation? Want to not only talk about these issues but implement solutions? Paperless April: Address Book

Don't you hate it when someone moves and you have to cross off their old info in your address book? Or what about when you run out of space in the section allotted for last names starting with M or S? Issues like these are a thing of the past if you decide to go paperless with your address book. Some of you are probably already well schooled in digital contact lists. If so, skip down and read the awesome post about Goodwill. If not, read on.

I use Gmail so I'm going to talk about Google contacts. I'm not super familiar with other mail server contact set ups, and I honestly think Gmail is the best option for many reasons - but I'll save that for another post. Here are my top five reasons to go digital with your contacts:

1. You can access your contact list from any computer with Internet (so awesome). Note - I do not like Outlook because there's not really a clean and simple way to access your account from multiple locations. Correct me if I'm wrong.

2. You can search contacts. Can't remember someone's last name? Not to worry, just do a search with their first name or other info you've entered and their listing will pop right up!

3. You can organize your contacts into groups - "My Contacts", "Family", "Friends", "Coworkers", "Medical" and any other categories you find necessary. It makes it so much faster to find who you're looking for.

4. You can sync your contacts straight to your smart phone. With Google, you can choose which contacts to sync simply by adding them to the selected sync group - I use "My Contacts". When you update info in Gmail, it automatically updates on your phone and vice versa. If your smart phone gets lost, replaced, stolen or busted, your contacts are still safely stored online.

5. You can take action right from a contact listing. Let's say you're looking at Emily Smith's info. With Google, you can click the link that says "map" right next to her address and Google maps will show you where it is (and you can print directions). You can also click her email and Gmail creates a new message. So efficient!

Whether you go digital via Gmail or other system, you'll be saving paper and time in the long run. If you love another digital address book, please mention it in the comments section or send me an email at hello@minimaonline.com.

Goodwill Really Is Good

Most people think of Goodwill as that place we take our old stuff when we don't want it anymore. Last week, Ellen Thornhill, Goodwill of Central Virginia's Communications Manager, gave a presentation entitled "Goodwill: I Had No Idea!" at NAPO Richmond's chapter meeting. We toured Goodwill's Midlothian facility this past Monday to see it all in action.

The presentation's title was fitting - I really had no idea about all of the awesome things Goodwill is doing for our community and the environment. Read below for my top three "I had no idea" facts.

I had no idea fact #1 - Goodwill's primary role and mission is as a workforce development organization, not a thrift store, that helps people with disadvantages and/or disabilities obtain employment. Their retail centers (stocked with your donations) serve as revenue to support these programs. What's more, you can feel good about helping your local community by donating to Goodwill. While it's a nationwide franchise, nearly 100% of the local revenue goes back into local programs - not into a national pot. Learn more about their workforce development services here.

I had no idea fact #2 - Goodwill can resell or recycle a lot more than you think. They package stained or torn clothing and resell it to textile salvage companies. Your old cell phones, computers and other electronics (even the broken ones!) can be refurbished by skilled staff and resold or responsibly recycled through Goodwill's Reconnect partnership with Dell. Medical equipment is sold through their partnership with the Free Foundation. Instead of tossing it, donate it! You'll be helping your local community and the environment. I had no idea fact #3 - In addition to revenue from their retail sales, Goodwill raises money for their workforce development programs through their Business Enterprise services, which includes Goodwill Staffing Solutions and Goodwill Document Destruction (shredding). Businesses can request a quote from Goodwill Document Destruction through Goodwill’s website. Individuals can simply bring their documents to Goodwill’s main facility where for $30, you can get up to 180 lbs of paper shredded (for anything above 180 lbs, it’s only $0.18/lb). Last year, Goodwill recycled over a million pounds of paper through its Document Destruction business and plans to do even more this year.

Every paper grocery bag of donations averages about $27 of revenue for Goodwill. If you were on the fence about spring cleaning, hopefully this post has provided new motivation to let go and give back to the community. Find a Goodwill donation center near you here.

Richmond Restaurant Week is here again... I'm always torn about this one. Some years I feel like joining the crowds to bombard some of Richmond's great restaurants and other years... I don't. I always enjoy seeing the list though and am especially curious to try Amour Wine Bistro in Carytown!

Uke til ya Puke! takes place tonight at The Camel with an 8:30 pm start time and free to all. Tonight's UnOpen Mic requires each act to include a uke player - all acts are acoustic and all performers are local. Mark Slomski hosts this monthly event.

Spacebomb Records brings us some of their favorite tunes via the turntables at Balliceaux on Wednesday. 10 pm and free.

Good week for music - Sprout is hosting the The Diamond Center, Nick Coward & The Last Battle and Amanda Shires on Thursday. 10 pm and free to all.

TAD, The Art Department, is a "next generation model for art education" and they're serious. Centered around virtual classrooms and with a physical presence in Austin, Kansas City and Richmond, TAD brings classes, lectures and workshops to those of us interested in more self-directed educational experiences. Check out the Printmaking in Illustration Demo taking place next Saturday, April 30, between 1 and 5 pm. Inexpensive and taught by three outstanding local artists, it's sure to be good! Check it out.
